Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement on the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United decision.
“The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision was one of the most damaging in our nation’s history. Even before this decision, billionaires and corporate interests had outsized influence in government. By overturning a century of precedents designed to limit their control, the Court opened the floodgates to unchecked corruption.
“Since Citizens United, billionaires have poured unprecedented sums of money into every election – amounts crossing into the billions by the 2024 cycle. The result is an administration crafted to serve the interests of the ultra-wealthy, with little regard for the well-being of the nation.
“This crisis demands bold action, whether through congressional reforms, a constitutional amendment, or reshaping the Supreme Court to ensure it represents the people, not corporate interests. These paths are challenging, but pursuing them is essential to building a government that truly embodies the promise of being of, for, and by the people.”
