DEFEND THE VOTE

Action Fund Scorecard

Introduction

Defend The Vote Action Fund advocates for legislation to defend and strengthen our democracy and to hold members accountable to their commitment to voting rights.

This year, we have released our inaugural legislative scorecard. We’ve tracked the efforts of every Member of Congress on transformative bills that ensure our democracy works for everyone, as well as on destructive legislation that attacks the core rights and freedoms of American citizens.

Our nation is at an inflection point as the attacks on our freedom and democracy continue to intensify. As much as any time in our nation’s history, we need Members of Congress who will side with the Constitution and the rule of law and fight to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to vote in safe, accessible, accurate elections.

Each Member of Congress’s actions on the following bills were scored.

A green check indicates the Member took action in alignment with Defend The Vote’s recommendation. A red X indicates they did not.

House of Representatives and Senate:

Freedom to Vote Act (H.R. 11/S. 1) -Cosponsorship: Comprehensive legislation to protect access to the ballot for Americans, establish commonsense federal election standards, limit the influence of money in politics, and strengthen our democracy.

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Co-Sponsor

John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 14/S. 4) – Cosponsorship: A bill to protect the right to vote and safeguard our democracy by restoring and modernizing the full protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA).

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Co-Sponsor

DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 1118/S. 512) – Cosponsorship: Legislation to end the scourge of dark money and shine a bright light of transparency on politics, including on the dark money forces that have been leading efforts to restrict the freedom to vote.

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Co-Sponsor

House of Representatives only:

American Confidence In Elections Act (H.R. 4563) – Cosponsorship: An extremist bill that undermines our democracy by eroding voting access nationwide, removing campaign finance safeguards, and taking steps to undercut impartial election administration.

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Oppose/No Co-Sponsor

Resolution That Trump Did Not Engage In Insurrection (H.Res. 1001) – Cosponsorship: Just another effort to whitewash Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, which included sending a violent mob of his supporters to the U.S. Capitol as Congress certified the results – leading to more than 1,200 people being charged with crimes.

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Oppose/No Co-Sponsor

Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (H.R. 8281) – House floor vote: Based on misinformation and false allegations about the 2020 election, the bill erects barriers to voting through additional, restrictive, and burdensome requirements on voters to verify citizenship status despite existing laws already requiring voters to do so and existing penalties for those who violate these laws.

  • Defend The Vote Action Fund Recommended Position: Vote No

Senate only:

Rules Reform to enact pro-democracy legislation – Support: Has voted or made a public statement in support of reforming the rules of the Senate to enact pro-democracy legislation.
