Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement in reaction to Donald Trump’s State of The Union speech.
“Donald Trump continues to lie about elections in an attempt to build support for the SAVE Act, which will block millions of eligible American citizens from voting.
“Those most at risk from the barriers, restrictions, and red tape in the bill include married women, military voters, rural voters, Native Americans, and voters of color. The SAVE Act would require states to share confidential voter roll information with the Department of Homeland Security for a federal voter surveillance system managed by Secretary Kristi Noem.
“The bill is part of Trump’s plan for a federal takeover of elections that would include giving Republicans control of elections in 15 key states – a plan that the American people oppose.
“Rather than trying to rig the system in his favor, Donald Trump should let the American people vote and decide who wins elections.”
Earlier today Defend The Vote Action Fund released new polling that found more than 60% of voters nationwide, including two thirds of Independents, are opposed to Donald Trump’s call for a federal takeover of elections.
