FEC DISPUTE: A new Federal Election Commission complaint alleges Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow’s campaign did not report hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on Facebook ads last quarter, POLITICO’s Jessica Piper writes in. McMorrow’s campaign spent in the ballpark of $700,000 on Facebook ads during the first three months of the year, according to data from Meta’s ad library. But the campaign only reported $100,000 in digital advertising costs in its latest FEC report.
The complaint, filed by the PAC Defend The Vote and shared with POLITICO, argues the Facebook ads should have been reported in some capacity as spending or debt, or would amount to an unlawful in-kind contribution. The FEC is unlikely to resolve the issue, as it does not have enough commissioners to operate. Defend The Vote has endorsed Rep. Haley Stevens in the hotly contested Michigan Senate primary.
