Defend the Vote, a national group focused on voting rights, is endorsing Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor of New Jersey.
“Mikie Sherrill is a remarkable leader who spends every day fighting for New Jersey families,” Defend the Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek said in a statement. “As Governor, she’ll stand up to Donald Trump, who is attacking the rights and freedoms of New Jerseyans in order to give power to his billionaire allies. We look forward to helping Mikie win this race.”
Defend the Vote, which was formed just a few years ago, has a stated goal of “preserving our democracy through ensuring voting access, education and protection.” The group makes endorsements of federal candidates it believes to be pro-democracy champions – all of them Democrats – and issues scorecards tracking the voting rights-related views and votes of members of Congress.
The endorsement of Sherrill isn’t the first time Defend the Vote has gotten involved in a contentious New Jersey primary; last cycle, the group was among the first to endorse then-Rep. Andy Kim’s eventually successful campaign for U.S. Senate.
