Leader-Telegram: Three candidates vie for Democratic nomination to Congress

EAU CLAIRE — Three Democratic candidates will square off in the Aug. 13 primary to be the party’s nominee for the Third Congressional District seat. The winner of the primary next week will face incumbent Republican Derrick Van Orden in November.

The candidates are State Rep. Katrina Shankland, small businesswoman Rebecca Cooke of Eau Claire and real estate worker Eric Wilson of Eau Claire. Cooke ran in 2022 but finished runner up to State Sen. Brad Pfaff, who later lost to Van Orden.

Cooke was born and raised on a dairy farm just west of Eau Claire. She has served on the Downtown Eau Claire Inc. board of directors and was appointed by Gov. Tony Evers to the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. board.

Cooke: I am proud to have earned the trust of everyday people throughout the 3rd District, including working families, small business owners, educators, healthcare workers, and farmers. I am also honored to be endorsed this cycle by a number of labor unions, local and national leaders, and organizations including: SEIU Wisconsin, CWA District 4, American Postal Workers Union, Office and Professional Employees Union, Blue Dog Democrats, New Dems Coalition, Defend the Vote, Tomorrow’s Jobs, Vote Common Good, DMFI, Jstreet, JDCA, Rep. Mike Thompson, Rep. Jared Golden, Rep. Marie Glusenkamp Perez, Rep. Brad Schneider, Rep. Sharice Davids, and more.

Cooke: If elected, I will work to restore reproductive freedom, codify Roe v. Wade, and stop politicians like Derrick Van Orden from banning abortion. We also deserve leadership committed to protecting Social Security, reducing healthcare costs, and making the economy work for everyone, especially our middle-class families and farmers, not big corporations. Our democracy is worth fighting for, and I will defend our democracy by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to protect the right to vote and banning partisan gerrymandering. In Congress, I will stand up for our shared values and always put our communities first.
