The SAVE Act is based on MAGA misinformation, is a continuation of the Big Lie, and is designed to set the stage for Republicans to attempt to overturn the 2024 election
Defend The Vote Action Fund Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement on the extreme MAGA SAVE Act, which the House of Representatives will debate and vote on later today:
“The SAVE Act is part of an extreme, anti-democratic agenda fueled by MAGA misinformation and conspiracy theories, all driven to undermine confidence and faith in our free and fair elections.
“Let’s be clear. This bill doesn’t solve any problems. It will erect barriers to voting for millions of Americans, including voters of color, military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, and survivors of natural disasters, among others. The reality is it’s designed by extreme MAGA Republicans to set the stage for an attempt to overturn the results of the 20204 elections.
“Instead of spreading misinformation and outright lies that undermine our democracy, the House majority should allow votes on the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The two bills work in tandem to protect our democracy and the freedom to vote.”
The Facts: It’s already illegal for non-citizens to cast a ballot in federal elections, and states have secure systems in place to prevent noncitizens from voting. Those who violate the law already face severe penalties. There is no proof it’s happening and Donald Trump’s own Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity was disbanded because it wasn’t able to find any proof.
