ICE should immediately suspend any operations that are not fully coordinated with state and local authorities until a complete, transparent, external investigation can be conducted
Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement on ICE operations and the murder of Renee Good:
The murder of Renee Nicole Good, mother of three, at the hands of an ICE agent is horrifying. It was also avoidable.
We mourn the loss of life and stand with families and communities who are demanding justice and safety. Our democracy and civil liberties depend on law enforcement that protects — not terrorizes — the very people they claim to serve.
For a year, aggressive ICE police forces–often wearing masks over their faces and without proper identifcation–have terrorized neighborhoods across the country, undermined First Amendment and civil rights, and turned our communities into tinderboxes of fear and distrust. An incident like this was inevitable.
It must stop now.
ICE should immediately suspend any operations that are not fully coordinated with state and local authorities until a complete, transparent, external investigation can be conducted — one that includes full access for independent investigators, state law enforcement, and community representatives.
The public deserves clarity, accountability, and assurances that constitutional rights are not being trampled.
