Defend The Vote Action Fund Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais.
“Today, in Louisiana v. Callais, an extremist conservative majority on the Supreme Court delivered a devastating blow to American democracy and to the foundational promise that every vote should carry equal weight. This decision is a direct assault on the core protections that have safeguarded free and fair elections for generations.
“For more than 60 years, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 has stood as one of the most effective civil rights laws in our nation’s history, protecting voters from racial discrimination and ensuring that communities of color have a meaningful voice in our democracy. Today’s decision guts those protections, clearing the way for discriminatory maps and practices that silence Black voters and other historically marginalized communities.
“This decision is the culmination of a relentless campaign by the Court to dismantle voting rights protections piece by piece. From Shelby County v. Holder, which struck down the heart of federal preclearance, to subsequent decisions that have steadily weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act, today’s decision accelerates a dangerous and deliberate erosion of one of the most important civil rights safeguards in American history.
“The Court has opened the floodgates to a new era of unchecked manipulation of our electoral system that could lock millions of Americans out of fair representation for years to come.
“This is a moment of profound crisis for American democracy. It is also a call to action.
“Defend the Vote will not stand by as the hard-fought gains of the civil rights movement are stripped away. We will work with out partners to hold those in power accountable, relentlessly support every electoral and legislative path to protect the franchise, and fight every day to ensure that every American, no matter their race or zip code, has an equal voice.”
