Calls on Congress to pass H.R. 14 to protect the freedom to vote
Defend The Vote Action Fund Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement in support of H.R. 14, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2025, which was introduced today by Representative Terri Sewell (AL-07).
“Voting provides people with the ability to shape policies that impact their lives—issues like grocery prices, housing costs, health care and gun violence. Without it, billionaire donors and corporations have all the influence to push through policies that benefit themselves at the expense of everyone else. Congress should pass the John Lewis Voting Right Act immediately to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.
“We thank Rep. Sewell for her unrelenting leadership on this bill and for fighting to protect the freedom to vote for all Americans.”
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act will once again join the Freedom to Vote Act–which will also be reintroduced this Congress–as top priority bills by congressional Democrats for an unprecedented fourth Congressional session. H.R. 14 is identical to the text that was introduced in the 118th Congress, when it was cosponsored by the entire House Democratic Caucus.
