Biden Calls on Congress to Pass Voting Rights and Democracy Bills

Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement on President Biden’s call for passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act during his State of the Union address on the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

“President Biden understands that our democracy works best when we all can participate. We’re grateful he called on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

“The bills are essential to protecting against the extreme MAGA forces working to take away the freedom to vote, cause chaos in our elections and electoral systems, and tilt our politics in favor of big money special interests. They will protect the right to vote, support election workers and modernize our election systems, ban dark money, and end gerrymandering.

“Congress should heed President Biden’s words and pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act to defend our democracy and ensure it includes all of us, that the will of the voters decides elections, and that political leaders listen to the voices of the people and are held accountable when they don’t.”

Earlier this week, Defend The Vote joined a historic coalition of 44 advocacy groups representing a broad range of issues urging President Biden to call on Congress to send him legislation that protects and defends voting rights and our democracy.
