Defend the Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek congratulated Scott Colom on his historic victory in Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race:
“Scott Colom has won, and Mississippi has made history. We are confident that when every ballot is counted, Scott Colom will be sworn in as Mississippi’s next United States Senator in January.
“For the first time since Blanche K. Bruce served during Reconstruction nearly 150 years ago, Mississippi will send a Black senator to Washington. This is an extraordinary milestone for a state with such a consequential history in the struggle for voting rights and equal representation.
“Colom’s victory is part of the overwhelming message voters delivered across the country last night. They’ve had enough. Americans are demanding change, accountability, and a government that works for them, not just billionaires and corporate special interests.
“Make no mistake that any attempt to manipulate, undermine, or overturn Scott Colom’s victory will be met with fierce opposition. The results must be respected–we cannot and will not tolerate any political interference or partisan gamesmanship.
“We congratulate Senator-elect Colom on this historic victory and look forward to working with him to protect the freedom to vote, strengthen our democracy, and ensure our government works for the people it serves.”
