MLK Dedication to Justice Stronger than Trump Assault on Democracy

Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose dedication to justice, equality, and the right to vote reshaped our nation. Dr. King saw voting as the most powerful tool for change. His leadership helped secure historic progress, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“These hard-won gains have been eroded in recent years by corporate interests and extremist politicians who have fueled voting restrictions, gerrymandering, and misinformation, especially in Black and Brown communities. Many of these efforts were designed to help elect Donald Trump, whose inauguration falls on this sacred day.

“Donald Trump exemplifies the forces Dr. King fought against: greed, division, and corporate control over democracy. From rolling back voting rights, to weaponizing government, to advancing policies that marginalize vulnerable communities, Donald Trump has highlighted how fragile our democracy is.

“Today, we draw inspiration from Dr. King’s work and legacy. We’re guided by the knowledge that our shared commitment to justice is stronger than any of Donald Trump’s attacks on democracy. We will build a nation rooted in Dr. King’s vision where every voice is heard, every vote counts, and power belongs to the people.”
