Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement in reaction to the release of the Special Counsel report on the charges brought against Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the 2020 election.
“The special counsel’s report affirms that Donald Trump led a criminal conspiracy to overturn the results of a free and fair election that culminated in a violent and deadly attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“Had the case not been delayed, with the assistance of the MAGA Justices on the Supreme Court, he would have been convicted for his crimes.
“While Donald Trump was able to avoid consequences in court, our work to defend democracy and hold him accountable continues. We must continue the fight for reforms that will protect our elections and our democracy and ensure that our leaders are held accountable to the people.
“We must pass reforms like the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, as well as ethics laws for Supreme Court Justices, and a constitutional amendment overturning the Court’s decision to give Donald Trump immunity to commit crimes while in office.”
