Defend The Vote Statement on Lousiana v Callais

Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek released the following statement ahead of oral arguments in Louisiana v Callais.

“Today’s Supreme Court oral arguments in Louisiana v. Callais may determine whether the Voting Rights Act can still protect voters from racial discrimination, or whether it will be gutted beyond recognition.

“For nearly 60 years, the VRA has been our nation’s most powerful tool to ensure everyone, especially communities of color, has an equal say in shaping the decisions that affect their lives – from the cost of groceries to access to health care. When special interests and billionaires dilute the political power of Americans, they get to rig the system in their favor, driving up costs and corruption.

“The Supreme Court should use this case to end the assault on the freedom to vote and once again defend the Constitutional rights of Americans to have their voices heard.

“Further, Congress must pass the Freedom to Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect the freedom to vote and crack down on corruption to ensure our government works for all of us.”
